Cruise to Stockholm on Silja Symphony

Helsinki-Stockholm cruise Mon November 17 - Wed November 19, 2025

The night before the trip, disaster struck when my spouse's phone stopped working. Nowadays, you can't survive without a phone. Everything is on the phone, for example train tickets and ship check-in. Luckily, he had an old spare phone, but it was still time consuming and stressful.

I was afraid in advance that we would be late for the ship. The train is scheduled to arrive in Helsinki at 3:40 PM, and the ship's check-in ends at 4:30 PM. If the train had been late, we could have missed the boat. But otherwise, it's perfect because you can get straight to the ship and don't have to wait in the rush for boarding to begin.

Before, we could only do these Stockholm cruises if someone (i.e. my mother) was there to take care of the cats. That's why we only did two Helsinki-Stockholm cruises. One in an A-cabin and the other in a Commodore. So we hadn't been in a Deluxe cabin before. They are only on deck 11, which is the top cabin deck.

I always want a sea view cabin. I don't understand those who want to look out onto the promenade.

Luckily, there weren't many people at the grandma's outing at the beginning of the week, even during the Christmas season. The Christmas dinner buffet had "rosolli" again and lovely beetroot whipped cream. I had been wondering for a long time whether I should drink alcohol so that I could eat breakfast and have the energy to stroll in Stockholm. In the end, I had two glasses of white wine at the buffet, and one Caipiroska at the nightclub. Then I woke up at 3 am with my heart pounding.

It's been a long time since I've seen a show on a cruise. There were two of them both nights, and there was no hope that I would have had the energy to watch the later one. Before, the shows could also be seen on the ship's TV in the cabin, too bad that's no longer the case.

It was also a shame that there weren't any nice Absolute vodkas in the ship's bars. I've been dreaming of Wild Berri for a long time, and now some Haring has also arrived. They were in the store, but why would I buy a pig in a poke? The most surprising thing is why Swedish liquor stores don't sell Absolute vodkas.

Luckily, the egg butter for the special breakfast was better than at Victoria. And the selection also included a cheese omelet, good but of course salty.

In Stockholm, we visited the liquor museum, which I had wanted to go to since my last trip to Stockholm, so maybe 11 years? The Spritmuseum was rather small and perhaps not entirely worth the price. The most interesting thing was the True Crime exhibition, and of course everything related to Absolut vodka.

The day in Stockholm was tough and afterwards I was really tired and my body felt like it had been hit by a train.

The ship was only at sea after dark, so we only went out on deck to take pictures when the ship was in Stockholm harbor.

Also, when leaving the ship, there was only 49 minutes to catch the train. Luckily, the ship wasn't late. The train was pretty full, which was a shame when I'm used to the last shift of the evening where there's no one.

On the way home, we saw a blimp. And in Kuopio, of course, I had problems on the rush hour bus when the card reader showed a red light and I thought the payment didn't go through. So I showed my bus card again and the payment went through twice. It's so annoying that it would be a place for crying out loud again. If I don't know how to act on the bus, I shouldn't go there.

I didn't even hope that my suitcase would fit spare shoes, or other boots. Of course, I would have another, gigantic bag, but I really wouldn't take it on a two-night trip. I had the usual foldable ballerinas for use on the ship, but they're now so worn out that I had to throw them away. I don't really know where I could get new ones cheaply, except from Temu.

I thought in advance about which woolen jacket to wear, the shorter one or the longer one. Luckily I wore the longer one because even though it was only a little bit cold, I was still cold sometimes without pants. Whether it is summer or winter, I am always cold. What can you do when I always want to wear a dress or a skirt on these trips.

The cabin temperature could be put to 25 degrees, and it was amazing that I didn't need any woolen socks at all. The first night, I even had to lower the cabin temperature. At home, I've been freezing at "only" 22 degrees.

Ever since Stinky (from Moomin) was canceled at a New York exhibition, I've been obsessed with getting Stinky-themed stuff. Justice for Stinky! I got Stinky socks from the ship. A shirt with a picture of Stinky and Moominpappa making moonshine was nice too. Somehow it feels like that isn't a children's shirt.

Watched movies and series

The Batman (2022)

I'm one of the few people whose favorite Batman movie is Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever. It's lighter and more humorous than the other Batmans, and it's literally less dark, more colorful. And it has one of my favorites at the time, Chris O'Donnell.

I have to admit that I haven't seen any of Ben Affleck's Batmans, but I still don't quite understand why Batman had to be made into a movie AGAIN. In my eyes, Robert Pattinson doesn't fit the main role. And why is Batman an emogoth? It goes too far towards unintentional humor. The movie was also too long.

It bothered me where Gordon's performer is familiar for me. Well, from The Hunger Games.

Flowers in the Attic: The Origin 2022

I first read V.C. Andrews' book Flowers in the Attic as a teenager. It wasn't until much later that I found out that there is a sequel to it. There are five books in that series, the last of which is a prequel, meaning it takes place before the events of the first book. And of course, where history is rewritten.

This miniseries is based on that prequel, which I haven't read. It tells the story of the evil grandmother from the first book. Wasn't she originally evil, but just an innocent victim of evil?

Flowers in the Attic is famous for its incest, the entire series is full of it. Fortunately, despite that, the children always turn out to be damn beautiful.

Creepshow (2019)

The horror anthology series Creepshow (2019) is a sequel to Stephen King's film of the same name. I didn't really care for that film, but from its sequel, Creepshow 2, the story The Raft has always stuck in my mind. In it, young people go swimming in a lake, a big mistake. At the end, a sign is shown saying "no swimming"...

There were three seasons of this series on Viaplay, the latest fourth was missing.

The series is very much in the same vein as the legendary horror series Tales from the Crypt, which I would seriously like to see again.

The story of the very first episode is based on King's short story Grey Matter, and otherwise contains King references. And familiar actors...

One episode (All Hallows Eve) made me cry quite inconsolably with its sadness. It's about a group of teenagers going trick-or-treating on Halloween night. For some reason, all the adults seem to be genuinely scared of them...

When the big brother says to his little brother at the end that "now you can rest" and "I wish I could have known you longer"... 💔

I also remember the episode where a person selfishly causes the destruction of all of humanity and Earth.

It Ends with Us

I haven't read the book by Colleen Hoover that this movie is based on. I stopped watching this movie for a long time because the male lead disgusts me so much when I have read about his disgusting behavior on set.

Kind of a strange movie. The main character wore strange clothes. I must have missed a lot because I haven't read the book. And this movie didn't make me want to read it.

Saw X

I borrowed this movie from the library. The whole movie is just flashbacks and fan service. I was waiting for the iconic theme song throughout the movie. But it can't be helped, towards the end this movie inevitably brought a smile to my face. Just when during the end credits I thought what about that guy, there was a scene and a surprising cameo. The biggest problem with this movie is that you know for sure that nothing can happen to Jigsaw and Amanda.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

I hadn't seen this movie in a long time and I borrowed it from the library. There's a cat in the movie and the iconic theme song Moon River played in my head. Oh, the poor cats, what they did to them on set. I don't think I even knew it was based on a Truman Capote short story, which was next on my library lending list.

The Lion King (1994)

I had wanted to see this movie for decades, and now, inspired by the game Dreamlight Valley and the book Nala's World, I finally borrowed it from the library. I watched the original English version of the movie, not the Finnish dubbed version. For some reason, tears came to my eyes. Only afterwards did I realize that the movie was full of famous voice actors.

Amazing Race Australia

The task was tough, but I managed to watch 21 episodes of the sixth season of Amazing Race Australia in the summer of 2025. The original Amazing Race USA has always been shown in Finland (in the summer), but unfortunately not this time. We had to settle for Australia, from which the first season was not shown either. This sixth season was special because it had twice the number of teams, which makes no sense. Nor the fact that many teams were in quarantine for a long time, but were then allowed to return to the competition normally. And the time penalties for not completing tasks were also ridiculously small, only 10-15 minutes. In the original, 4 hours! With that Australian system, it would be more profitable to leave all the tasks undone. Unfortunately, I was spoiled for the winning pair when I went online to check if one of the competitors was still alive.

Northern Lights

This acclaimed series was on my bookmarks for a long time until I finally watched it. Two broken souls meet in a Dublin night. I don't know how I would have reacted to this if I hadn't read the spoilers in the episode descriptions. I'm surprised that adults who work and date regularly still live with their parents.
